Job Title:  Residential Mentor - Overnight Shift

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt 

Department:  Campus Life

Position Summary:  A Residential Mentor is primarily responsible for the overall well being of the students, staff and physical space associated within the wing they reside in.  They will coordinate, oversee, monito and communicate the day to day operations of their wing.  They will be charged with creating a safe, healthy and educational environment for the students living in your area and provide effective communication to parents and academy administration.

 

Position Responsibilities

Campus Life

  • Serve as a responsible, adult presence, providing guidance and support in the residence halls for staff and Student Athletes
  • Assist Student Athletes with multicultural development, learning, character building, community development and personal well being.
  • Assist in the analysis and implementation of policies and procedures ensuring that the Student Athlete code of conduct is being maintained
  • Participate and follow up on recreational, educational and cultural programs for Student Athletes
  • Promote a positive healthy environment for the student athletes
  • Work collaboratively to develop maintain and administer a Residential Life Curriculum.
  • Evaluate, oversee and maintain the residential hall, including room checks, maintaining a safe, secure and healthy living environment
  • Keep track of Student Athlete’s daily schedules
  • Participate and follow up on recreational, educational and cultural programs for Student Athletes
  • Diligently track deadlines that affect student and campus life
  • Promote a positive healthy environment for the student athletes

 

Qualifications

Operations

  • Perform regular walk-a-rounds and inspections of the residence halls working with maintenance, accommodations and other departments to coordinate and direct upkeep requests
  • Coordinate with campus safety and security staff to ensure the security of students and residence hall(s)
  • Assist with housing process including check in/out, early arrivals and opening/closing of residence halls
  • Attend and contribute to department meetings
  • Contribute to general planning for Academy and summer camp programs

 

Communication

  • Collaborate and communicate emergency response and crisis management plans for various situations including weather, lockdown, student illness, injury, etc
  • Collaborate with departments including sports, academics, health services for student athlete’s development
  • Communicate openly and regularly with parents/guardians
  • Assist with orientation and acclimation of Student Athletes to campus life
  • Communicate and enforce appropriate disciplinary actions for violations
  • Communicate daily with staff regarding residence life happenings
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures and business ethic codes
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Knowledge, Skills and Ability 

  • Experience of working in living in a secondary residential environment
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling or related area
  • Experience with residential life, summer camps or secondary school
  • Highly organized with the ability to juggle multiple projects
  • Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one
  • Must be able to reside in dorm facility
  • Experience in counseling, crisis response and mediation
  • Excellent guest service skills
  • Must possess good judgment and sensitivity relating to students of various backgrounds
  • Ability to handle challenging situations professionally and with sensitivity
  • Highly organized with the ability to juggle multiple projects
  • A superior work ethic
  • Desire to work collaboratively with colleagues
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

 

Preferred Skills

  • Prior experience as a dorm/house head in a secondary educational environment
  • Master’s degree in Education or Counseling
  • Experience in training, selection, supervision, programming and evaluation of staff
  • First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Experience in education, sports or related area
  • Experience with overseeing 50+ residents
  • Proficient with computer and web applications
  • Experience in a high-pressure, academic/performance setting
  • Bilingual
